The Brief
We were appointed to support a young client living with profound cerebral palsy, who requires round-the-clock professional care.
While the family had adapted their previous home as far as possible, it soon became clear that it could no longer meet the complexity of their daughter’s needs. The property couldn’t accommodate live-in carers without compromising family privacy, and there was no suitable space for a lift or specialist equipment.
Our role began with sourcing a new rental property in the Greater Manchester area — one that would allow the family to stay in their local community, while giving them the space, privacy and accessibility they needed to move forward.
Watch the VideoThe Challenge
Though the new property offered more potential, adapting it came with its own set of technical challenges. To install a through-floor platform lift to the first-floor bedroom and dressing area, we had to cut through a concrete floor — a significant structural task that also required the redirection of internal services.
Down in the basement, we faced restrictions on drilling through the floor or walls in order to protect the existing waterproof membrane. This complicated the creation of a separate carer’s suite, which needed to include both a bedroom and WC.
Despite these challenges, the goal remained the same: to create a family home that could accommodate specialist care discreetly, while ensuring comfort, space and dignity for everyone.
The Solution
We undertook a full programme of works to make the new home function for both our client and her family.
Key to the brief was the installation of XY ceiling track hoists to both the ground floor therapy room and first-floor bedroom and ensuite. A through-floor platform lift was installed to connect living areas with the upper floor, with structural modifications made to form a new dressing area around the lift opening.
Doorways throughout were widened to ensure safe and comfortable wheelchair access, while the first-floor bathroom was completely reconfigured with a new, accessible suite.
We also carried out renovation works to the kitchen and created a fully self-contained carer’s suite in the basement, including its own WC — allowing 24-hour care without disrupting family life.
Externally, new ramps were installed to create level access at the front and rear of the property, along with a new EV charge point to support sustainable travel.
The Result
What was once a conventional family home has been transformed into an accessible, future-proofed space that works for both specialist care and everyday life.
Our client now has the privacy, equipment and space she needs to be supported with dignity — and her family have a calm, comfortable environment in which they can continue to live, relax and thrive together.
Through careful planning and precise delivery, we’ve created a home that balances high levels of care with warmth, independence and normality — the things that matter most.
