Adapting a family home in Sutton for a client with an acquired brain injury

The Brief

We had the pleasure of working closely with our client, Tony, to design a bespoke house that supports his needs following an acquired brain injury.

Tony suffered a stroke during a routine hernia operation, resulting in disability with mobility limitations, including issues with balance. Prior to purchasing the house in Sutton, Tony and his family lived in a small, dark home that was unsuitable for his needs.

The Challenge

The project involved adapting a three-bedroom 1930s house in Sutton, which was in need of modernisation. The cost of purchasing and upgrading the property to meet the required standards posed significant challenges, especially with a limited budget.

Our task was to ensure the adaptations catered to Tony’s specific needs while also accommodating his family’s requirements. This included designing bedrooms for the family and creating spaces for family gatherings.

The Solution

We were engaged to create a solution that allowed Tony to live more independently with his wife and two sons. Our architectural team designed a large rear extension to provide ample space, including three bedrooms. Downstairs, we crafted a bespoke suite for Tony, featuring a principal bedroom, level access, a shower room, and an en-suite.

We also provided access to a garden room serving as a therapy space and an area for relaxation. The entire house underwent a comprehensive makeover, including replacing the kitchen and family bathroom to ensure the home was both immaculate and accessible.

The Result

Despite challenges with budget and timing due to additional family requirements, the project was completed to a high standard. Tony now benefits from having all amenities on one level, eliminating the need to climb stairs.

The transformation of the home has been life-changing, allowing Tony to live comfortably and more independently in his forever home with his family.

The joy on his face when he received the keys was a testament to the success of the project, which provided a usable and welcoming environment for him after such an unfortunate event.
