Enabling a Comfortable and Functional Living Environment for a 6-Year-Old With Cerebral Palsy

The Brief

In 2023, PLG Consultants were entrusted with the task of assisting the family of a brave 6-year-old girl with severe cerebral palsy, stemming from a catastrophic brain injury. Although the family lived in a house with some accessibility features, it was not spacious enough to accommodate the additional support staff required, nor did it provide a comfortable living environment for her parents, siblings, and care team. The aim was to find a new home in Cambridgeshire that would cater to their specific needs and enhance their daily living experience.

The Challenge

The girl’s parents were uncertain about which works should be prioritised, and given that the property was a rental, they wanted to ensure that any modifications would provide the best possible solution within the budget. To address this, we conducted a full measured survey and presented a range of options with estimated costs, enabling the family to make informed decisions for their daughter’s needs.

Finding a rental property that met the family’s requirements while navigating the competitive market in Cambridgeshire was challenging. The property needed to be both accessible and adaptable for the young girl’s condition. During the search, one particular house stood out, with landlords who were open and understanding about the necessary adaptations. However, a brief delay in securing this house required exploring other alternatives. Despite this setback, the team were proactive and persistent in negotiations, eventually confirming this house as the ideal new home.

The Solution

PLG’s dedicated team quickly assessed the rental market, arranging property viewings and engaging with landlords to discuss required adaptations. The initial plan included creating a wet room and modifying the driveway for wheelchair access. However, budget constraints led to a focus on redesigning the en-suite bathroom instead. This renovation resulted in a spacious, easy-to-navigate bathroom with ample room for carers and a shower chair. Although securing landlord permission for these adaptations posed challenges, persistence paid off.

An unexpected technical issue with the underfloor heating complicated the wet room installation. The solution was to install a large level-access shower tray, effectively meeting the young girl’s needs. To overcome the heating challenges, careful screeding under the bedroom floor finish was done, allowing the care team to move the young girl on her shower chair seamlessly from the bedroom into the level access shower area. A thermostatically controlled shower ensured constant water temperature, and a long-reach hose attachment allowed carers to use the shower effectively. The wash basin was strategically positioned to encourage the girl to stand and use it, with support from her carers and parents nearby.

The Result

The successful adaptation of the house marked a significant improvement in the young girl’s care and overall family life. The redesigned wet room greatly enhanced her daily routine, and the spacious home comfortably accommodated the family and support staff.

PLG completed the project two weeks ahead of schedule and under budget, transforming the house into a functional and comfortable environment.

This journey underscored the importance of patience, flexibility, and clear communication. The family now resides in a home that supports their daughter’s needs and provides a nurturing space for her continued growth and happiness.
