Creating a Future-Proof Accessible Home: Danielle’s Story

The Brief

Danielle’s home already had a great setting — tucked away at the end of a peaceful cul-de-sac, right next to a park. It offered privacy, safety, and easy access to green space. But the property needed significant adaptations to meet her ongoing needs and provide a future-proofed, fully accessible living space.

PLG was appointed to design and oversee works that would deliver both the functional changes required for Danielle’s day-to-day life and an aesthetic finish that complemented the original home.

The Challenge

The project faced several challenges from the outset. The existing property required extensive demolition works, including the removal of a garage block, sections of the roof, internal walls, and the existing stairway to open up and reconfigure the space for accessibility.

Achieving level thresholds across the property involved stripping external finishes and careful reconstruction. Budget limitations meant that costs had to be closely scrutinised, leading to scope changes during the build.

A particular challenge was ensuring that the new wrap-around extension blended seamlessly with the original house. This was achieved by matching brickwork and combining reclaimed roof tiles with new ones, creating a natural transition that was almost indistinguishable. Throughout the process, clear communication and rapid resolution of unforeseen issues were essential to keep the project on track.

The Solution

PLG worked closely with Premier Building Services and the client family to deliver a sensitive and functional solution. The design included a new two-storey wrap-around extension providing space for carer accommodation, therapy, a spacious principal bedroom, and an accessible wet room fitted with specialist sanitary ware.

A new automated front door and internal platform lift improved mobility and access throughout the home. Inside, internal walls were reconfigured to create a larger kitchen and dining area, ground floor WC, hallway, and storage.

A new bi-fold door opened up the kitchen/dining space to the garden, enhancing light and accessibility. The project incorporated ceiling hoists in key areas and updated wall and floor finishes throughout, balancing practicality with comfort. The finished extension not only met the family’s immediate needs but was designed with future adaptability in mind.

The Result

The project successfully transformed the property into a home that supports Danielle’s care requirements without compromising the family’s lifestyle or the property’s aesthetics.

The new extension blends beautifully with the existing building, maintaining the charm and character of the house while delivering modern accessibility and functionality. The client and her family now enjoy a safe, comfortable environment where care needs are met discreetly, and independence is maximised.

The thoughtful design and close collaboration between PLG, the building contractor, and the family ensured that the project ran smoothly despite budget and scope challenges. This home stands as a testament to what can be achieved through careful planning, flexibility, and a focus on the client’s quality of life.
