Finding and adapting a home in Exmouth for a Man United fan with locked-in syndrome

01

The Brief

A new build inspired by Manchster United

We were instructed by our client’s deputy to collaborate with him and his support team to find, design, and build a new home in the coastal town of Exmouth following the settlement of his case. Our client had sustained catastrophic injuries, resulting in locked-in syndrome with acute clinical needs. The property needed to accommodate our client, his extensive care regime, and his mother, while remaining in close proximity to other family members who lived in the town.

The Challenge

Given the severity of our client’s disability, the house’s design and development needed to cater not only to his clinical needs but also to his personal tastes and interests. As an avid Manchester United fan, prominently displaying his memorabilia was essential.

Additionally, a bespoke cinema room was a key feature, allowing him to enjoy films and, importantly, the big games. Exmouth, being a coastal town, presented a significant challenge due to the size of the level plot required, with easy access for care and local amenities also being essential to the home.

The Solution

Following an extensive search, we identified a derelict property in the centre of Exmouth that was originally slated for redevelopment into nine apartments. Despite existing planning consent, the property offered historical significance to the town. Once a deal to purchase was agreed upon, we worked closely with the vendor, local authority, the client’s legal team, and high-level insurance contacts in Central London to successfully navigate several challenges before purchase. These included the risk of potential future subsidence related to boundary trees and neighbouring property, along with extensive work to secure new planning consent after incorporating concerns raised by the parish council regarding the old highway wall along the boundary.

Through these discussions and design meetings, the site was split into two parts, with our client’s house becoming the main focus, and a secondary detached three-bedroom property built for his mother. The main house features a large master suite on the ground floor with views over the patio, which is home to our client’s unique statues, ample storage, a kitchen, various utility facilities, a lounge, and a carer’s office and day room.

A lift provides access to the first floor, which includes a guest bedroom, a carer’s bedroom, a bathroom, a fully equipped therapy room with a hoist and access to the balcony, a media hub, and the bespoke cinema room.

The Result

The end result is a truly unique environment that caters to all our client’s current and future needs in a beautiful home setting. Located in the heart of this picturesque town, the property provides an uncompromised living experience, ensuring both functionality and comfort for our client, allowing for the critical care he needs 24/7.
