The Brief
PLG were approached by the family of Nasim to assess how their home — purchased before Nasim’s injury — could be adapted to meet her changing needs. Nasim, the family matriarch, had experienced a serious heart attack that led to significant complications and, ultimately, a leg amputation. As we navigated through these conversations and into the planning stages, she remained in hospital, deeply concerned about how she would navigate her multi-level family home post-discharge.
The family came to us privately, without wider support from a care team. This meant we worked closely and directly with Nasim and her daughters to design a solution that would provide comfort, safety and long-term independence.
The goal was to preserve Nasim’s ability to enjoy her home fully. That meant ensuring she could access every part of the house with ease, continue to enjoy her own bedroom and ensuite, and retain her sense of privacy, independence and connection to her family.
Watch the VideoThe Challenge
While the property had been much-loved by the family since purchase, it presented several challenges. A series of previous extensions had created an intricate layout of corridors, levels and steps. Doorways were narrow, access was limited, and circulation space wasn’t suitable for someone with mobility needs. Creating a truly accessible property was certainly going to be challenging.
Adding to the complexity, the family remained living on-site during the works. With Nasim still in hospital, all decisions were made on her behalf, usually by her daughters — who had the added responsibility of coordinating with both PLG and the building contractors during a period of high stress.
Despite these challenges, the family were incredibly engaged and passionate about getting it right for Nasim, and the project became a close collaboration between PLG, the family and our trusted contractors.
The Solution
From the outset, we focused on delivering independence and dignity within the constraints of a defined budget.
One of Nasim’s key wishes was to remain in her original bedroom, so a discreet through-floor lift was installed to connect her bedroom with the living areas below. Her ensuite bathroom was fully remodelled into an accessible wet room, complete with a self-cleaning WC and level access shower. The family bathroom was also redesigned to meet the needs of everyone living in the home.
To bring more of the outdoors in, we enlarged the rear balcony, creating level access so Nasim could once again enjoy views over the back garden. A formerly inaccessible garden was made fully reachable via a new level access patio, with extensive landscaping works completed to enhance usability and aesthetics.
The previous utility room was transformed into a second kitchen, fitted with rise-and-fall worktops so Nasim could safely prepare food and maintain independence in her daily routines. Doorways were widened, thresholds levelled and corridors reworked to allow seamless wheelchair navigation throughout the home.
At the front of the property, we created a new, subtly hidden access ramp behind a raised flower bed and increased the size of the driveway with a two-tone resin finish — offering more space for vehicle transfers while complementing the look of the home.
The Result
The adaptations have helped transform a complex, multi-level property into a warm and welcoming space where Nasim can live independently and comfortably with her family.
This isn’t a typical adaptation project — the home retains its character and charm and doesn’t feel clinical or institutional. Every detail was designed with sensitivity, privacy and dignity in mind, while still meeting the practical needs of life post-injury.
Thanks to the collaborative approach between PLG and Nasim’s family, especially her daughters, the finished result is both elegant and functional. Nasim now has freedom of movement, continued access to the spaces she loves, and the reassurance of a home that works for her needs — now and into the future.
