PLG Architects Win LABC South West Award for Best Residential Conversion

PLG Architects Triumph in LABC South West Awards 2024

We are thrilled to announce that PLG’s team of architects, led by Architectural Designer Jason Kennedy, has been awarded the prestigious LABC South West Award for Best Residential Conversion or Alteration to an Existing Home in 2024. The LABC regional awards celebrate outstanding achievements within the construction industry, including exceptional buildings, companies, partnerships, and individuals who go above and beyond.

Award-Winning Project: The Quillet, Devon

The project that earned this award is The Quillet in Devon, a remarkable transformation that involved internal alterations, remodelling, and the erection of a new indoor pool building. The goal was to create accessible accommodation for a wheel-chair dependent client with Cerebral Palsy, alongside their family.

Working closely with the family, PLG Architects ensured that the renovation met all their needs and aspirations. The primary focus was to provide full-level wheelchair access throughout the ground floor, making every part of the property and its surroundings fully accessible and functional for our client’s long-term needs.

One of the most challenging aspects of this project was the inclusion of an indoor pool within a compact site. Access to the property was limited, and space was tight, but our team carefully coordinated the design and construction to deliver a facility that allows the young client to receive regular water-based therapy at home. Previously, this therapy required difficult transfers to external facilities, but now it can be done in the comfort and convenience of his own home.

The family was delighted with the outcome, as the alterations have made a phenomenal difference in their lives, providing each member with the space to thrive within their particular needs.

Overcoming On-Site Challenges

As with any project, The Quillet presented its challenges, particularly with on-site restrictions that required minor alterations to the structural engineers’ details. However, thanks to the collaborative efforts of our team and the local building control officer, these challenges were swiftly addressed, minimizing delays to the program.

A specific issue arose with the existing drainage system during the external works, necessitating further adaptation. The local building inspector’s input was crucial in developing a satisfactory and cost-effective solution, ensuring the project continued to progress smoothly.

This close collaboration and on-site decision-making saved both time and money, demonstrating the importance of teamwork in delivering a successful project.

Phill Gill, Director of PLG Consultants Ltd, expressed his pride in the team’s achievement:

“This is a life-changing property for our client and their family, and we’re proud to go the extra mile. We don’t set out to win awards, but I am so happy for Jason and the team to receive this recognition as it is a testament to their ethos to go above and beyond for our clients. This is PLG’s ninth LABC Award in recent years, including a prestigious national award, and that says everything about our team.”
