Architectural drawings are often seen as the finished product of the design process. A floor plan, an elevation or a technical detail can appear to be little more than instructions for construction.

In reality, they’re something quite different.

Every drawing represents a series of decisions. Decisions about how someone will move through a building, how spaces connect, how natural light enters a room, how future adaptations might be accommodated and how different professionals can work together to create a home that supports independence.

Long before construction begins, most of the design work has already happened. The drawings simply communicate the thinking behind those decisions.

Architecture Begins with Questions, Not Answers

One of the biggest misconceptions about architecture is that we start by designing rooms.

We don’t.

We start by asking questions.

How will someone use this space?

What does their day look like?

How do they move around the home?

What equipment do they rely on today, and what might they need in the future?

How will family members, carers or visiting professionals interact with the space?

Every answer influences the next design decision.

By the time the first line appears on a drawing, a significant amount of thought has already gone into understanding how the building needs to perform.

Good architecture isn’t simply about creating attractive spaces.

It’s about creating spaces that work.

Looking Beyond the Floor Plan

When I review a property, I’m not immediately thinking about kitchens, bathrooms or bedrooms.

I’m analysing circulation.

Circulation is simply the way people move through a building, but it’s one of the most important aspects of residential design.

Are routes between rooms logical?

Are there unnecessary changes in direction?

Will furniture, mobility equipment or specialist adaptations affect movement through the property?

Could someone navigate the space comfortably without creating obstacles elsewhere?

For adaptation projects, circulation becomes even more important because a layout that works perfectly for one household may not work at all for another.

Sometimes moving a doorway by a few hundred millimetres can completely change how a room functions.

That’s the sort of decision that begins on a drawing long before anyone picks up a tool.

Why Size Isn’t Everything

People naturally focus on floor area when comparing properties.

It’s understandable.

Estate agent floor plans encourage us to think in square metres.

Architects look at something slightly different.

We’re interested in usable space.

Two rooms may have exactly the same floor area but perform completely differently.

One may have generous ceiling heights, regular proportions and plenty of flexibility for furniture or specialist equipment.

The other may lose significant usable space because of sloping ceilings, awkward corners or structural features.

A room can look large on paper while offering surprisingly little practical space.

Equally, a well-proportioned room can feel considerably more spacious than its measurements suggest.

It’s another reminder that drawings are about much more than dimensions.

They’re about understanding how a space will actually function.

The Importance of Orientation

A floor plan doesn’t tell you everything.

Some of the most important information exists outside the building itself.

Whenever I review a property, I’m also thinking about its orientation.

Which rooms receive morning sunlight?

Which spaces remain cooler throughout the day?

Where are the main outlooks?

How much privacy does each room offer?

Natural light has a significant influence on how a home feels to live in.

It can affect comfort, wellbeing and the way people naturally use different spaces throughout the day.

For some clients, maximising daylight may be a priority. For others, privacy or managing glare may be equally important.

The individual’s needs are also an important part of these decisions. If someone has limited mobility and spends significant periods of time in bed, for example, the position of the bed and surrounding furniture becomes particularly important. Direct sunlight, glare and heat may affect their comfort throughout the day, so orientation and room layout need to be considered alongside their individual needs.

Understanding the relationship between the building and its surroundings allows us to make informed design decisions that go beyond what’s shown on the plan.

Every Line Has a Purpose

People sometimes assume drawings are produced purely to explain what will be built.

In reality, they’re one of the most effective ways of exploring ideas.

Every line represents a decision.

Every dimension is there for a reason.

Every annotation helps someone else understand the design intent.

Architectural drawings also evolve throughout a project.

Early concept drawings help explore possibilities and test different approaches.

Developed drawings refine those ideas.

Technical drawings introduce construction information, dimensions, specifications and details that allow contractors to build accurately.

Each stage answers different questions while gradually reducing uncertainty.

That’s why drawings are never static documents.

They’re part of an ongoing conversation.

Designing with the Whole Team

Architecture is rarely a solitary profession.

Some of the best design solutions come from collaboration.

On many of our projects we’re working alongside Occupational Therapists, case managers, contractors, structural engineers and specialist suppliers.

Each brings a different perspective.

The drawings become a shared language that allows everyone to contribute.

A recent bathroom project demonstrated this particularly well.

The Occupational Therapist had carefully identified the equipment the client would require and produced an initial layout showing where everything could be positioned.

Using manufacturer-specific CAD components, I recreated the room with the exact dimensions, operational clearances and movement arcs for each piece of equipment.

Although everything technically fitted within the room, modelling the swing path of the bath seat showed that it would clash with the basin during use.

The drawing allowed us to identify this early and explore alternative layouts together before agreeing on the most suitable solution.

That’s the value of the design process.

It’s not about finding faults.

It’s about refining ideas until everyone has confidence that the proposed solution will work as intended.

Thinking in Three Dimensions

Although much of our work begins with two-dimensional drawings, architects are constantly visualising spaces in three dimensions.

When I review a floor plan, I’m mentally walking through the property.

I’m opening doors.

Turning corners.

Looking through windows.

Considering ceiling heights.

Thinking about how natural light changes throughout the day.

Imagining how someone will experience each space as they move around the home.

That process often reveals opportunities that aren’t immediately obvious when looking at rooms individually.

Because architecture isn’t really about designing individual rooms.

It’s about designing the relationship between them.

More Than Technical Drawings

Architectural drawings can appear highly technical.

They contain dimensions, symbols, notes and details that may seem overwhelming to anyone outside the profession.

But behind every drawing is something much simpler.

A series of carefully considered decisions.

Decisions informed by experience.

By collaboration.

By understanding how people live.

And by asking the right questions before construction ever begins.

For me, that’s what architectural drawings represent.

Not just a design on paper, but the thinking that helps transform a property into a home that genuinely works for the people who will live there.
