Transforming a Family Home in Greater London: Space, Access and Hydrotherapy

The Brief

PLG were instructed to adapt a family home in Greater London for a young client living with cerebral palsy. The client, a wheelchair user, needed dedicated spaces to support her independence and care, while the family required a home that worked for everyone.

What began as a request for relatively minor works soon evolved into a more extensive project once the scope of the client’s long-term needs became clear.

The Challenge

The house needed significant adaptations to create both accessibility and comfort.

One of the biggest challenges was the existing basement swimming pool, which had been unused for years but offered the opportunity to be transformed into a hydrotherapy pool.

Designing this space meant carefully reconfiguring the plant room and equipment, all within a basement setting that created difficult access for contractors.

The project also required a balance between specialist adaptations and ensuring the home remained welcoming and family-friendly.

The Solution

A programme of works was carried out to make the home safe, accessible and future-proof.

This included the creation of a new bedroom with study for the client, the installation of a fully adapted wet room, and the addition of a lift to enable movement between floors. Internal redecoration and landscaping provided level thresholds and ramped access to the garden, while a new carport allowed for safe, undercover transfers.

The most transformative element was the conversion of the unused basement pool into a purpose-built hydrotherapy pool. Alongside the technical adaptations, a seating area was created to ensure the space could be enjoyed socially as well as therapeutically.

The Result

The family home in Kingston has been reimagined as an accessible, supportive environment tailored to the client’s needs.

By combining thoughtful design with practical solutions, the property now provides independence, therapy and comfort, while also remaining a place where the whole family can live and relax together.
