The Brief

Life-changing Road Traffic Incident

PLG were instructed by Keith’s solicitors following his involvement in a life-changing road traffic incident. The accident left Keith with spinal injuries, resulting in him becoming a wheelchair user. As part of his claim, it was clear that Keith needed a more suitable property adapted to meet his specific requirements.

At the time of Keith’s injury, he was living in a detached property where manoeuvring was challenging, and he had limited access to many rooms.

The Challenge

Rental Search in Westbury-on-Trym

Our Property Finding team immediately began searching for a rental property that would offer Keith suitable temporary accommodation. Securing rental accommodation is a valuable interim step, ensuring that clients like Keith can live comfortably while building a clearer picture of their requirements for a purchase home once a settlement has been reached.

For Keith’s rental, our team secured a detached bungalow that required only minor adaptations, allowing him to access all areas. Small modifications were made to enhance Keith’s mobility, including widening doorways and installing a wet room.

The Solution

Seeing the Potential of a Property

Once Keith was settled in suitable rental accommodation, the team then shifted their focus to finding a property for purchase. This home needed to provide ample space for Keith, including room for his grandchildren to stay and enjoy family time together. It was crucial that Keith could manoeuvre easily and independently around his home.

Additionally, the property needed a garage to house his much-loved, adapted Harley-Davidson trike. We secured a property in Bristol that required modernisation and had the potential for extension.

We constructed a large two-storey extension to the side of the property and installed a lift, allowing Keith to access all areas. The new upstairs bedroom included an ensuite wet room, and level threshold access was created throughout the property. The design also allowed for the future installation of hoists, if needed.

Keith explained, “I need a home that is just right for me to scoot around in, a place where I can access all areas. I am looking forward to returning to normality.”

After managing the design, planning process, and overseeing the contractors on site, construction progressed well. The outcome speaks for itself.
