Award-winning home designed for a Bristol City fan with an acquired brain injury

The Brief

We collaborated closely with our client, who has an acquired brain injury (ABI), ensuring that he remained central to every aspect of the project. We understand the transformative impact that creating a “forever home” can have, and this was particularly evident as we transformed this property into a home for life for our client and his family.

Taking advantage of the stunning views towards the Severn Estuary, we extended and redesigned the downstairs living spaces to be fully accessible. Additionally, we installed a lift, enabling our client to sleep upstairs alongside the rest of his family.

The Challenge

The existing property was a four-bedroom, traditional detached home with accommodation across two floors, in need of significant modernisation and extension to make it suitable.

It was essential to work closely with all stakeholders to ensure that the proposed works were sympathetic to the area and practical for our client, meeting his clinical needs as well as accommodating his tastes and interests.

The Solution

By keeping our client central to every aspect of the project, we fully understood the transformative impact of creating a “forever home.” As the project evolved, it truly became a home for life for our client and his family.

Taking advantage of the stunning views towards the Severn Estuary, we extended and redesigned the downstairs living spaces to be fully accessible. This included a large open-plan kitchen and dining area with full-width bi-fold doors opening to the rear, and a therapy space equipped with a hoist, TV, and music, enabling his essential rehab to be undertaken in a comfortable home environment. Additionally, we installed a lift to enable our client to access the upstairs, where his bedroom and fully accessible bathroom are located, allowing him to sleep alongside the rest of his family.

Extensive works were also undertaken at both the front and rear, with a new level access patio installed at the rear, linked to the lower tier garden and garden room by a sympathetic ramp configuration, accompanied by planters.

The Result

Our client now enjoys a set of rooms with views overlooking the surrounding countryside. He also has access to a balcony fitted with privacy glazing connected to his bedroom, offering immediate outside space and stunning scenic views across the fields to the River Severn.

To make this home truly bespoke, we themed his wet room and bedroom in red and white, reflecting his passion as a die-hard Bristol City fan. He loves it, and so do we.

The judges at the LABC Regional Awards were equally impressed, awarding us the prize for Best Inclusive Building.

We regularly witness the positive impact that a thoughtfully designed home can have on individuals with an acquired brain injury. This property was no exception, and we are grateful for the opportunity to bring this vision to life for our client and his family.
