Finding and adapting a forever home for a young client with cerebral palsy

01

The Brief

Our delightful client, India, and her amazing mum, Emma, have just made one of the most important moves of their lives. Born with cerebral palsy as a result of medical negligence at birth, India has faced numerous challenges, but her indomitable spirit and her mum’s unwavering support have always prevailed. Now, with the help of PLG, India has moved into her forever home – a space that has been meticulously adapted to meet her needs and provide a nurturing environment for her continued growth and happiness.

The Challenge

India has cerebral palsy and lives in the Cotswolds with her mum, Emma. Things have been tough for Emma, who has looked after her daughter brilliantly for years, starting off in a tiny flat before PLG found them a more suitable rental.

The most rewarding part of India’s journey has been finding and adapting her new forever home. When we found a property in a village close to Cirencester, it was less than inspiring: a drab 1960s bungalow that had seen better days.

The Solution

However, Glenn Hotchin, Director of PLG, saw the potential the property offered.

“This project has been one of the most collaborative I have been involved with. With clever design, input from a brilliant multi-disciplinary team, Emma’s tireless energy, and everyone’s can-do attitude, we have been able to convert a rather shabby bungalow into a fantastic family home for India.”

The Result

The bungalow now offers ensuite accommodation for Emma, guest space, and a suite for carers, including an ensuite and kitchenette. There’s a cosy snug where Emma and India can snuggle up and watch TV together, and a fully accessible garden to enjoy on long summer days.

One of the highlights of the property is the dramatic conversion of the old pool room into a stunning kitchen and living room. This included the integration of a hoist system within the A-frame in the lounge, making this a discreet but necessary feature for India to enjoy these areas while also preserving the beauty of the classical wooden structure. Creating a light and airy space, with large doors opening onto a wraparound patio, this huge space is the heart of the home.

India’s own suite of accommodation is fabulous. Input from the multi-disciplinary team and family was instrumental in designing this project to cater specifically to all of India’s needs, and the result is stunning.

The Feedback

As Occupational Therapist Ellie Bircher explains:

“It’s about making the environment completely accessible for her to enjoy life to the fullest and have lots of opportunities. There is always a risk when doing adapted properties that they can look a little bit clinical and functional, but Emma’s input has made this a home, and it is absolutely beautiful. It’s been lovely to work with the team to make this dream a reality for her.”

Case Manager James added:

“I don’t think we can articulate exactly how this will change India’s life. Having everything on hand and in-house will be absolutely fantastic.”

For many years, we have said that regardless of any settlement, the end of the journey for our clients is an emotional move to their forever home. This case has certainly underlined that sentiment. It seems fitting to leave the last word to India’s mum, Emma:

“I can’t quite believe we have our own hydro-pool that she will love as it is an activity she can do at home. We just love it!”

India and Emma, everyone at PLG and the wider team wish you every happiness in your new home!
